(Translated from German)
Sabina Akhter escaped the life of a maid servant through a school system supported by CMES.
“When my father told me that I must go to the capital, Dhaka, to work as a maid servant, I knew it would be very bad”, says Sabina Akhter (12).
“I have heard that many girls who work as maid servants are treated as slaves by the owners. Sometimes they are even beaten.” Sabina also feared that she would have to discontinue her studies and would not be able finish her education- an important goal for her in her life. But she also knew that as a young woman, this was her only chance of escaping poverty. Sabina’s father, Boyjuddin was a tailor and was facing difficulties feeding his family properly due to dire financial circumstances. He was under great distress and pressure. Together with her sister, Sabina persuaded her father to look for an alternative plan. Her former teacher told her that it is illegal to sell children as maid servants. Sabina saw an opportunity to attend one of the schools of CMES. CMES understands the need for survival of the poor and works under the concept of a particular school system where students will not only learn ordinary school curriculum but also get practical training and acquire skills with which they can earn an income. Today Sabina works as a tailor and helps out her family financially. She has become a model in the community and neighbors who are sending their daughters to school following Sabina’s example.
